20 Week Check-Up

So we had our "big" 20 week check up appointment.  We started out with the ultrasound.  The technican was as entertaining as she was skilled with locating various baby parts.  She moved through things quickly, pointing out landmark body parts (spine, face, hands, legs, etc).  We got to see and hear baby's heartbeat (149 BPM).  We both were enthralled with watching our little one squirm around on the screen.  It must not have been pleasant being prodded at, as there was lots of movement!  The technician was nice enough to show us our baby in 3-D, using the new 4-D technology.  You could see smiles and individual fingers!  So amazing!!  The technician saved the best for last, finally informing us (and showing us), the gender of our new little one.  The Posey clan will be adding another BOY to the household!  John was quite prouud of himself, and happy to have a little boy to eventually rough around with.  I'm just happy we don't have to name hiim John A. Posey IV!!

Once the ultrasound was over (and mommy FINALLY got to pee!), we waited to see the doctor.  She took a look at the ultrasound pictures, and said everything looks good!  He shows no signs of physical deformities.  He is measuring about 11 ounces now, which is exactly where he should be.  Mom has gained a total of 10 lbs, which is right on track.  Mom remains in the "low risk" category for the pregnancy, although the placenta is attached a bit close to the cervix.  The doctor said as the baby grows, and the uterus stretches, this usually fixes itself, and raises away from the cervix.  However, if the placenta stays low, it means mommy has to have a C-section.  This is definitely NOT in mommy and daddy's birth plan, but delivering with the placenta so close to the cervix would be dangerous for both mom and baby.  Let's hope things work out and the placenta migrates up a bit!  A natural child birth would be WONDERFUL!!

So there really IS something in there!!

For weeks (months actually), I have had many moments where I doubted the existence of this supposed child growing within me.  Despite photgraphic and audiologic evidence, as well as an ever-expanding waistline, I still had my doubts.  Then, on October 30th, I felt something.  At first I thought it was a gas bubble, but it felt more abrupt, and stayed within about the same spot, rather than moving its way around my intestines.  I have to say, it was an interesting feeling, and I couldn't help but smile at the thought of this little alien-like person moving around in my belly.  John was a bit jealous he couldn't feel it yet, but I'm sure he'll be able to feel it soon enough.
And for those of you who have been as eager as I have to see my baby bump... Its finally arrived!!!
